FAQ

  • This is my initial class 1  medical. What other tests will i need?  

    • You will need an ECG, audiology test, Fasting blood tests ( Lipids and Blood glucose) and an Ophthalmology ( eye) assessment  See "additional tests"  below for more information

  • Can I get my Initial Ophthalmology Assessment done at any  Optometrist and do i need a referral?

  • Do i need to bring my glasses or contact lenses for my medical ? 

    • Yes you need to bring your glasses including your spare pair on the day of examination. If you wear contact lenses, you will need to be able to remove them for unaided testing and will be required to bring your back up visual aid ( contact lenses of glasses) ​

  • My last medical has run out and i would like to renew it. Can i do it? 

    • If your last medical ( class 1,2 or 3 ) has lapsed, your DAME will NOT be able to revalidate your medical, and you will have to go through it as an initial assessment. If you are applying for a class 1, you will be required to be go through and initial assessment ( medical, ECG, audiology, blood tests and ophthalmology ) ​

  • How long can my medical be revalidated for? 

    • On the day your medical, your DAME can revalidate your medical for 2 months provided it has not lapsed. ​

  • How long do i need to fast for my blood tests? 

    • You should fast for about 8- 12 hours prior to your blood tests​

  1. Additional tests for Class 1 and 3 medical certificates 

      Initial issue 

      The following medical tests are required on the initial issue of a medical certificate 

​​

  • ECG

  • Audiogram 

  • Blood tests ( fasting lipids and blood glucose levels) 

  • Calculation of cardiovascular risk

​

     Medical certificate Renewals 

​

    The following medical tests are required for medical certificate renewals :

​​

  • ECGs are required at the first renewal after the age of 25, 30, 32, 34, 36, 38 and 40. After 40, an ECG is required annually

  • Audiograms are required at the first renewal after the age of 25 and then every 5 years from age 25

  • fasting lipids and glucose are required at the first renewal after age 25 and then every 5 years from age 25 until age 60, when they are required annually

  • An eye examination is required by a DAO or CO age 60, then every 2 years after

    2. Additional tests for Class 2 medical certificates

     There are no special requirements for Class 2 medical certificates, unless clinically 

      indicated 

   

    3. Additional tests for Basic Class 2 medical certificates 

   There are no special requirements for Class 2 medical certificates, unless clinically 

    indicated
